These figures are deliberately broad. A three-day road safari and a three-day Serengeti fly-in safari are very different products.

On a private safari, vehicle and guide costs are shared among the travelers. A safari for two people will therefore normally cost more per person than the same vehicle carrying four or six guests.
Traveling together as a larger family or group can help reduce the per-person cost, as vehicle, guide and other shared safari expenses are spread across more travelers.

The main disadvantage is the additional driving time to the crater.
Mahale is different because chimpanzee trekking and Lake Tanganyika are central to the experience.
Staying inside Mahale National Park provides an immersive wilderness setting and convenient access to trekking areas, depending on the camp’s location.
An alternative is Sokwe Camp, outside the park, approximately 14 km from the chimpanzee trekking area and about 1 km from the park entrance. Guests travel by boat to the trekking area each day.
The boat journey adds some logistics but can also become part of the experience, with beautiful views of Lake Tanganyika and its shoreline. Staying outside the park may also provide more comfortable hotel-style accommodation and potentially better value.
