The best time to visit Tanzania depends on where you want to go, what you want to see, and when you are able to travel. Tanzania is a year-round destination, but its safari seasons do not always correspond with the main holiday periods in Europe, North America and other international markets.
This is important when planning a safari in Tanzania. The Northern Hemisphere summer holiday period, for example, coincides with Tanzania’s main dry season and an important period for wildlife viewing, making July and August particularly popular. By contrast, March to May falls within Tanzania’s long rains and generally overlaps with a quieter international travel period.
Tanzania’s Northern and Eastern regions generally have two rainy seasons, while much of Southern and Western Tanzania has one main rainy season.
Rather than simply identifying a “best month,” Calabash Adventures helps travelers balance their available holiday period, safari priorities, weather, accessibility, and budget.

Tanzania’s safari calendar |
|
What it means for international travelers |
| Christmas–New Year | Short rains in the North; wetter conditions developing in the South and West | A popular family holiday period. Book early, especially for safari and Zanzibar combinations. | |
| January–February | Generally favorable in Northern Tanzania; Serengeti calving season | A strong winter escape for Northern Hemisphere travelers and an excellent period for calving-focused safaris. | |
| March–May | Long rains in much of the North; main rainy season across much of the South and West | A quieter international travel period, with greener landscapes and potential value. Road and camp conditions require careful planning. | |
| June | Transition into the main dry season | A useful period for travelers seeking improving conditions before the main summer holiday demand. | |
| July–August | Main dry season and important wildlife-viewing period | Coincides with major European and North American summer holidays, creating strong demand for popular parks and accommodation. | |
| September–October | Generally dry and favorable for safari | Can suit travelers with late-summer or autumn flexibility, with demand often easing after July–August. | |
| November–December | Short rains in the North; increasing rainfall elsewhere | Greener landscapes and fewer visitors earlier in the period, followed by rising demand around Christmas. |
These are broad planning periods rather than fixed rules. Tanzania has different regional climates, and conditions can vary between parks and from year to year. Northern and Eastern Tanzania generally experience two rainfall periods, while much of Southern and Western Tanzania has one main rainy season.
Tanzania’s safari seasons and the world’s main holiday periods sometimes align perfectly—and sometimes they do not.
The clearest example is July and August, when Tanzania’s main dry season overlaps with major summer holidays in Europe and North America. This combination makes these months particularly popular, especially for family safaris and Great Migration journeys. The Serengeti’s dry-season period generally runs from June to October, while January and February are associated with the calving season.
At the other end of the calendar, March to May falls within Tanzania’s main long-rain period. For travelers with flexible dates, this can mean greener scenery, fewer visitors and potentially more favorable accommodation rates, although road conditions and seasonal camp operations need to be considered.
Christmas and New Year are different again. The timing may not represent the same combination of weather and wildlife conditions as the July–August peak, but it is one of the most important international holiday periods. Demand for family safaris, private vehicles, lodges and Zanzibar accommodation can therefore be strong.
This is why we recommend choosing your safari dates by considering both when you can travel and what Tanzania offers during that period.
If your holiday dates are fixed, we start with the international calendar and then work through Tanzania’s safari calendar:
For travelers with flexibility, we can instead work in the opposite direction—starting with the experience you want and identifying the travel period that best supports it.
That distinction is important. There is no single month that is universally best for every Tanzania safari. The right timing is the point where your holiday window, wildlife priorities, regional weather, accessibility, accommodation availability and budget come together.
Calabash Adventures uses this approach when planning tailor-made safaris, rather than applying the same seasonal recommendation to every traveler.
