Udzungwa Mountains National Park is the third-largest national park in southern Tanzania. It is in the Eastern Arch Mountains. Despite the existence of tropical forests, the park is home to many rare species of wildlife. You can find rare species of monkeys like Sanje mangabey, highland mangabey, and Kapunji. Also butterflies, chameleons, and a variety of rare species in the world. There is the Sanje waterfall, and a very large park with other large animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, and other animals. From the peak of the Uzungwa Mountains, you will be able to see the Nyerere reserve.

Not far from Udzungwa reserve you will meet the world’s most unique frog reserve known as Kihansi. Researchers are working hard to discover more in this land, including the study of plants and animals. Recently they found a new type of coffee that contains 7 times more nicotine than conventional coffee. And now researchers are trying to prepare it for agriculture. Nearby is also the Kilombero Valley, which is a very important valley for the future of the Rufiji River and agriculture in Tanzania. in this valley there are fish-eating owls and these are the only attractions here.

Ruaha National Park is of course the source of the Rufiji River. The Great Ruaha River flows very close to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and connects with the Kilombero River to form the Rufiji River. Nyerere National Park is one the largest national park in Africa with 55,000 square kilometers. It has beautiful marshland scenery with plentiful hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife. It has Africa’s highest numbers of wild dogs and buffalo, as well as lions, elephants, leopards, and giraffes. Despite ongoing poaching and hydro-development challenges, Nyerere National Park remains an iconic safari destination and offers the best part of southern Tanzania.

Ruaha National Park is the second-largest national park in East Africa, but the 20,226 square kilometer park is relatively unknown outside of Tanzania. Statistics show that Ruaha is home to some 10 percent of the remaining wild lion population in Africa, and is absolutely the best place to explore southern Tanzania. Stunning landscapes dotted with giant baobabs; numerous elephants; open grassland for a plethora of games, and it is one of the few places where you can see greater kudu in Tanzania.

The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to October when most animals gather near the permanent Great Ruaha River. Ruahariver along with the Mzombe, Jongomero, and Mwagusi rivers, provide the spark of life in the park. The banks of the Ruaha provide a rich hunting ground for lions. Other animals on the top of the list in Ruaha are leopard, cheetah, hyena, and African wild dog, which prey on the impala, gazelle, and waterbuck that come to drink at the river.
