jambo, jambo This is to let you know that our first African adventure has finally come to an end and we got back home safe. Not our luggages though as they have been left behind by mistake by Kenya Airways staff at Nairobi airport, but they are to be delivered to us hopefully within tomorrow, so hakuna matata ;) Apart from this small inconvenience, our trip was one to be remembered. Thank you very much for your help and flexibility in putting together the schedule of our trip and arranging every little detail of it. Keep in touch over linkedin and facebook Asante sana! Thank you for nice Safaris

As I used this forum a lot while I was researching our trip very last minute), I thought I`d post a report in case it could help anyone out. We booked a last minute trip to Tanzania in February to climb Kili, go on a safari and visit Zanzibar for some diving. Finding a tour operator was challenging as there seem to be so many and we didn`t know exactly what we wanted, but on this and other boards we found recommendations for Calabash Adventures (http://www.calabashadventures.com) so we decided to contact them. Tillya was our contact and he was great about responding to emails and giving us information. He was also the only one we contacted that seemed to understand we wanted to see the Wildebeest migration and specifically altered our itinery so we would be able to see them. Our journey to Tanzania was fraught with difficulties which meant that we couldn`t send a deposit after booking with Calabash, nor could we go to their office when we arrived to give it to them ( we were in Moshi, they are in Arusha) but through it all, Tillya and Calabash were helpful, understanding and booked our safari anyway. Tillya also booked us into a hotel in Arusha (we had no idea where to stay), the Olduvai Inn, centrally located US$25 per night bed and breakfast. He was great and helpful even before our safari started and got even better after.

Tilya, I am back in the US, and I just wanted to drop you a brief note to let you know how pleased we were with our Safari tour. Initially, when I booked, I had my reservations, because Calabash is not one of the big tour companies, but having experienced your professionalism and our driver, James , as well, we are completely satisfied with your service. James knowledge of the park and animals, are extraordinary, and his patience and punctuality are admirable. Thank you for getting me booked in the luxury lodges of my choice. We enjoyed the time spent at Tarangire Treetops and at The Manor at Ngorongoro Manor. We are looking forward to seeing you soon, as I plan to take my family on a safari sometime soon. I wish you the best in your business endeavors, and please give James our regards. Thank you. Hello again Tillya, Sorry I haven`t written earlier, I`ve been catching up with work and clearing my desk and clients emails etc. Tillya thanks so much for organizing a great safari. We had a great time, all the lodges you choose were great. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the lodges, but of course our favorite was the farm (just because it was exciting to see a real coffee plantation up close in Africa). Wilson was also a great guide, we learned a lot about the different animals (he`s better than an encyclopedia). And also I want to really thank you for all the extra help you provided in getting our gorilla permits and booking our accommodation in Zanzibar (which was very lovely and relaxing). And, of course always answering my questions promptly. I`ll definitely be recommending you to my friends and family so maybe you`ll get more New Zealanders coming your way. Thanks again Tillya. African big game safari and the best yet!
Rating 5 Reviewed: July 22, 2011 New
Having just got back from yet another safari – out ninth African big game safari – I wanted to write a review about the company we used, Calabash Adventures. Four years ago we wanted a budget safari for five days in Tanzania, and Calabash did such a great job of arranging this, that we thought we`d use them again. I am so glad we did, as this certainly was the best safari ever! Calabash is a small, locally owned company and I am a firm believer in using someone who is there,`on the ground` for my arrangements, as you get more local knowledge and someone who can sort out problems if there are any. Not that there were any problems, in fact the safari ran smoothly from start to finish. We were really impressed with the tented camps (some permanent, some mobile), that Calabash chose for us (I left the choice entirely up to them, the only input I had was my budget). They seem to have got a real `feel` for what we wanted. I didn`t realise tents could be so luxurious! (and no, we didn`t stay in the top star places, just middle of the road). Dickson, our driver was amazing. Again. He seemed to always know where the best place for photography was (and a great spotter), was extremely knowledgeable about birds, animals, geology, history, culture and botany, and imparted the knowledge at the right time and place, making it such an interesting trip. Another thing I really liked about Dickson was his English – a great vocabulary and an easy-to-understand accent. He`s also got a great sense of humour and became a really good friend. I can wholehearted recommend Calabash to anyone who wants personal, friendly service combined with competitive prices. And no, I don`t work for them..... hehe

I am sorry for taking so long in answering your email with regards to our trip to Africa. The real reason for the delay is to know what to put in the email … how can you actually describe the most fantastic trip of a lifetime in words! I would love to be able to say that “our trip of a lifetime” is the start of our trips to Africa but unfortunately I doubt that. That is why it is/was such a special trip the first time. Tillya, thank you for all your efforts in making our trip so special. I know Andrea and yourself spent many hours and emails putting the trip together. Thank you, thank you. With Scott and Andrea taking pictures I thought I would keep a journal of our travels. When arriving back home and starting to type it up it was great to relive our trip. Hopefully Ken will enjoy reading it as well when I do give it to him to read. I thought it would be a great keepsake for all of us but especially Scott and Andrea for years to come. It was hard to keep up with my journal but I did.
